Eastbourne Ancestors and The Blue Monkey Group

The Heritage Lottery Funded Eastbourne Ancestors Project has been working with local Eastbourne Artists from The Blue Monkey Studio which is an Artists Network Group. You can find out more about Bluemonkeynet from their website.

Thanks to Judith Alder, (the point of contact for the Blue Monkey Group) several artists have shown an interest in volunteering with our project.

Paul Powici is a Photographer who has been capturing the emotive effects of Human Remains and Volunteers from the project in black and white film. His work can be viewed on his website and blog

Here are some of Paul’s photos from our project:

Sheila Hay is a Ceramicist and Art Lecturer at Sussex Downs College.  Sheila recently brought students from her Life Studies class to the Eastbourne Museum Service to take part in the HLF Eastbourne Ancestors Project. The students took part in a life drawing class with a twist, using a living model and a skeleton to focus on the subject of anatomists from Renaissance art. The Skeleton in the photos below is that of the Eastbourne Ancestors ‘Beachy Head Lady’ who will feature in the Eastbourne Ancestors Project to find out what era she comes from, her place of origin and what she may have looked like amongst other things.

Staff from Eastbourne’s Sussex Downs College Art Department have also taken an interest in the project and are looking for ways to get their courses involved in the future. These include Jewellery Production, Printing and Textiles.
